The “Tell Me Anything” Promise
If you only do one thing tonight, say this. In the car, at bedtime, any calm moment.
It works whether or not your child has a phone yet, and every other talk in the guide builds on it.
The phone question is coming. Maybe it’s already here.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
- “Everyone in my class has a phone.” You hear it every single day.
- You’ve seen the “Is your child ready for a phone?” charts and realized you haven’t had a single one of those talks yet.
- You know you should talk about nudes, porn, and online predators, and you freeze at the thought of saying those words to your 10-year-old.
- They found out about a group chat or a hangout they weren’t part of, and they’re crushed (and blaming you).
- You worry a phone will make your child more anxious, more distracted, and less like themselves.
- Most of all, you want them to come to you when something goes wrong online, not hide it.

A PEEK INSIDE
Words that stay kind and stay firm
Why it works: It names the real need (belonging) without changing your answer, then turns the argument into problem-solving together.
Why it works: People who exploit kids count on shame and fear of punishment to keep them quiet. Taking “trouble” off the table is what brings your child to you.
BUILT BY A THERAPIST
HI! I’M KATIE
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and child therapist with more than 10 years of experience helping kids and their families. In my therapy room, I hear the same thing from parents again and again: “I know I need to talk about this. I just don’t know what to say.”
The Phone Talks is what I’d hand you if you were sitting on my couch: calm, honest words you can read straight off the page, tested against the reactions real kids have.
Kids need skills, not shame.
The readiness skills in this guide are the same ones taught in my Skills Courses for Kids at Katie Peterson Skills Academy.
Before
- Daily “but everyone has one” arguments
- Putting off the scary talks because you don’t know where to start
- Guessing whether your child is ready
- Worrying they’d hide it if something went wrong online
- Feeling like the only parent saying no
After
- One calm answer and a monthly check-in, instead of daily debates
- Ten talks done, colored in on the tracker together
- A clear, skills-based answer to “Is my child ready?”
- A child who knows telling you will never get them in trouble
- A plan you feel good about, whether the answer is yes or not yet

QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK
Before You Get Started
What ages is this for?
It’s written for parents of kids 8–12, and each talk is tagged with the age it usually lands best. It also works for younger kids who are already online and for young teens getting a first phone.
We’re not getting a phone for years. Is this still for us?
Yes. The Not Yet Plan gives you a way to say “not yet” without the daily fight, and most of the talks apply right now to tablets, game consoles, smartwatches, and friends’ phones.
My child already has a phone. Is it too late?
Not at all. Start with Talk 10, the “Tell Me Anything” Promise, and the page on what to do when they tell you something hard. Then work through the rest at your own pace.
Does it cover social media?
It includes a bonus talk on why getting a phone and getting social media are two separate steps. It isn’t a full social media guide; it’s focused on the conversations to have before and around a first phone.
Do I still need parental controls?
Use them! But filters miss things, and kids use friends’ phones. The talks are what protect your child when the filter doesn’t.
Is this therapy?
No. It’s an educational resource for parents, and it isn’t a substitute for individualized mental health care. If your child seems sad for weeks, pulls away from friends, or loses interest in things they love, talk with their pediatrician or a therapist. If your child talks about not wanting to be alive, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, US).
